2. Looking Elsewhere
There is a lot of good practice around the world and some countries have similar housing issues to the UK. Many UK organisations have close links with housing organisations in Europe. Some look even further - to Canada, Australia and USA for examples of good practice. The internet makes it much easier to find out about good ideas in housing from all parts of the world.
It is also important to recognise that good ideas can come from beyond housing. Virgin Airlines wanted to improve their turn around time of their flights but to do so they didn't look to other airlines, they sent a team of researchers to Formula 1 racing to observe and record, in minute detail, the activity taking place in the pits before a car came in, when it came in and after it left.
As a result they were able to improve their turnaround times and get their planes back in the air where they belong.
'Making Innovation Work' - Example 3:
IiA funded the Tenant Auditor project in Sandwell which also involved 2 Registered Social Landlords. This involved training tenants to audit their landlord's services.
Effectively undertaking an inspection of the services, the tenants set their own priorities depending on the performance aspects and issues of most importance to them.
As a result, Tenants were able to find the weaknesses in the service and suggest ways of improvement.
This has become part of Sandwell's continuous improvement process.

'Making Innovation Work' - Example 4:
IiA funded the Resident Service Organisation project in London and Birmingham. This involved developing Resident Services Organisations in 3 TMOs:
The RSOs are community-led bodies which employ local residents to deliver local services. Jobs were targeted and mainly transitional creating a stepping stone to employment outside the neighbourhood.
As a result tenants gained skills and experience that helped them secure positions elsewhere. Whilst with the RSO they helped improved their own neighbourhood.
